James Dern Bio

Teaching the course is James Dern.  Born in the bay area and raised in Fairfax, James has been making art for the last twenty plus years.   Earning a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1998 was only the latest in an education dominated by art.   The course he offers is modeled after his own after school art program taught by Helen Stanley in the early 1980’s.  

Drawing & Painting – Wednesday Afternoons

James Dern will teach a Wednesday afternoon workshop in which the overall goal of the course is to enhance creativity and artistic confidence.  Taken from  Drawing On The Right Side Of the Brain  by Betty Edwards, this class begins with learning to see the object; shifting away from the habits of drawing "symbolically”.  We continue with negative space, perspective, proportion, and rendering.
