Crochet Basket Hat:
We will meet 2 evenings to learn and complete the Crochet Basket Hat. The pattern is created by Heather Graef. You will learn to combine crochet stitches you may already know, to make a luxurious textural hat/beanie.
This hat project will take 4-to-8-hours to complete, depending on your experience. We have 4.5 hours total class time. You will work on your project between classes, with the goal of finishing your project. But, this is not a test! If you don't finish, you can book Heather for a follow-up session.
Who is this project for?
The hats are worked in the round, and use mostly standard stitches. If you are not familiar with crocheting in the round, and creating a lot of texture with your crochet work, this project is for you! Students should already have a basic knowledge and ability to crochet, but are interested in being coached through a new challenge.
We will review/cover:
• Magic loop
• Double crochet stitch
• Double crochet stitch in the front and back post
• Half-double stitch & variations
• Stitch increases for working in the round
• Tips for keeping track of your rows
• Invisible bind-off for finishing the hat, and hiding the yarn tails
• Libations for all ages, snacks
Project Materials Included:
Teacher Heather will provide a skein of soft-gray Berrocco Ultra Alpaca* yarn to work with. If you would prefer a different color you please contact Heather at heathergraefstudio [at] gmail.com. She will send you a photo of the colors available.
*Berocco Ultra Alpaca is a soft alpaca/wool bled worsted-weight yarn. If you are allergic, please let Heather know asap and she will find a similar yarn for you to work with (yarn/color choice will be more limited.
Feel free to bring your own crochet hooks. There will be a Clover Amour 5mm (H) crochet hook you can use in class.
You will take home the pattern for this project.
About the instructor, Heather Graef:
Hello crocheters! I am a Marin County native and live on a houseboat here in town. Aside from scheduling the Studio 333 Maker Workshops, I practice graphic design, and explore all kinds of arts & crafts; my current craft focus is crochet design, and kettle-dyeing yarn. My crochet hats and other handmade goods are sold in at Studio 333's sister shop, Studio 333 Downtown.
Over the next few months, we will make the following hats:
Basket Hat (woven look)
Boneyard Beanies "Mavericks" Beanie (knit-look crochet cap)
Ripple Hat (horizontal rib-look)
Two-color Boyfriend Beanie (using two colors simultaneously to create stripes!)
3-D Spiral (super-cool 3-D look)
Ribbed Short Row Beanie
